What medical conditions make you unable to drive?

Medical conditions that can disqualify you from commercial driving include severe visual impairments, unmanaged epilepsy, serious neurological disorders, insulin-treated diabetes lacking strict glucose monitoring, and debilitating cardiovascular diseases like severe angina or recent heart attacks.

Primary DVLA Group 2 Disqualifying Conditions:

  • Vision failing to meet the mandatory Snellen 6/7.5 standard.
  • Epilepsy, unprovoked seizures, or unexplained blackouts.
  • Severe Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA) causing daytime sleepiness.
  • Unmanaged psychiatric illnesses or severe cognitive decline.

Holding a Group 2 licence places immense responsibility on a driver, which is why the DVLA medical standards are stringent. Having a pre-existing medical condition does not automatically mean you will lose your licence. Many conditions, such as Type 2 diabetes or managed hypertension, are perfectly acceptable provided they are stable, properly monitored, and declared to the DVLA.

However, progressive neurological conditions, uncontrolled seizures, and untreated substance dependencies will result in immediate disqualification. Our medical team assesses your unique health history accurately to ensure you meet all legal safety parameters before you get behind the wheel.
