About the Japan Visa Medical Requirements

Applying to live, work, or teach in Japan through official channels like the JET Programme or MEXT Scholarships requires strict adherence to the Japanese Embassy’s health guidelines. A “Statement of Physician” is a highly specialised medical clearance document. Unlike a standard Certificate of Health (which is a general physical exam), the Statement of Physician is a targeted assessment.

This document is only triggered if you have disclosed a pre-existing medical condition, ongoing prescription medications, recent surgeries, or a history of mental health treatment on your initial Self-Assessment Medical Report. The Japanese consulate requires a qualified, registered doctor to review your clinical history, evaluate your current health status, and formally declare that your condition is stable and will not hinder your ability to safely live and work in Japan.

FAQs about our Japan Statement of Physician

What is the difference between a Certificate of Health and a Statement of Physician?

A Certificate of Health is a general physical examination (including vision, hearing, and often a chest X-ray or urinalysis) required for many Japanese visas. The Statement of Physician is a separate, specific document required only if you declared a medical condition or ongoing medication on your initial application. If you need both, our doctors can complete them during the same appointment.
Not necessarily. The purpose of the Statement of Physician is not to automatically disqualify you. The Japanese authorities simply want to ensure that your condition is well-managed, that your medications are legal in Japan, and that your health is stable enough to handle the demands of relocating to a new culture. A positive sign-off from our GMC-registered doctors shows the embassy you are fit to travel.
The form must be completed, signed, and officially stamped by a fully qualified, registered physician. Because the doctor is making a clinical judgment about a pre-existing condition, they must have access to your medical history. This is why you must bring your NHS Summary Care Record to your appointment so our GMC-registered doctors can legally verify your history and sign the paperwork.
The consultation is highly efficient, typically taking around 15 to 30 minutes. Provided you have brought your NHS Summary Care Record and your condition is stable and well-managed, our doctors will complete, sign, and stamp your official Statement of Physician form on the very same day, allowing you to submit your visa application immediately.
